“Inside the Shell” Clamshell Quilting

Let me show you how something as simple as a half circle (Clamshell), or multi sizes of circles, can really add pizzazz to your borders and sashings! We will create multiple continuous line designs to embellish the large and small spaces left open by the clamshell.

Threads, Needles, Tension, Feet

Get ready to have some fun with Sarah! Her catchy tune for covering basic TNT knowledge will surely get you on your feet (and possibly singing along!) and make this class both educational and enjoyable. Quilt with ANYTHING! Did you know you can quilt with metallic, monofilament, yarn, silk, and more?! Sarah will demonstrate many types of thread and incorporate the library of Handi Feet for different techniques. Learn how to adjust and set tension as well as select the proper needles to expand beyond your comfort zone. You’ll leave class with the confidence to use any thread or foot on your machine. Now is the time to see all the feet in action, from Couching and Echo to the Sure Foot and Glide…you’re bound to be up on your feet with fun and knowledge during this class! Please bring note-taking supplies to this lecture/demo – the rest will be provided for you. If you have a particular thread sitting on your shelf at home that you’ve been shy to try, feel free to bring it to class to discuss and share our results with everyone.

Finding the Perfect Design

Have you ever had trouble finding that perfect design for your quilt, or a customer quilt? Ever wanted to have a unique design for a very special quilt? In this hands-on class you will learn how to take images from your fabric or a special theme and create a one-of-a-kind edge to edge. The tools in Art and Stitch make it fast and easy. And Mary Beth will teach you how to make the most of those tools. You will need a laptop computer with Art and Stitch Version 4.1 loaded. Trial version is available at www.artandstitch.tv/update.html. Important note: Trial version is just fine for class. You do NOT need an activated version to participate. You can use all the tools within Art and Stitch but you will not be able to save what you create with the trial version. Load the program at least a few days BEFORE class. You will not be able to download the latest version during class. Don’t forget your: • Power cord for laptop. • Wired mouse. Drawing with the small cursor pad on a laptop is difficult and the teacher can help you more easily if you have a mouse. • Paper and pencil for note taking. • Dry erase marker • USB stick

Taking your Quilting to the Edge – CLASS FULL

Why limit yourself to traditional or modern, transform your own style to be just a little bit “edgy?” Should you leave wiggle room, or quilt to the “edge?” Let the edge of the area do some defining and echoing. Don’t neglect your borders, learn border treatments to sharpen the look of the “edge” of your quilt as well. Learn how to add the little extra to keep your quilting style on the “edge.”

This class may be the most fun you can have at HQ Academy this year! Come join HQ International Educator and Real Life Quilter, Diane Graf Henry, as she teaches you to use the Handi Quilter Couching Feet to decorate a fun and easy cross-body bag that you can take home and show off to all your friends and family! In class you will learn how to evaluate what size couching foot to use with what size yarn, how to install that foot and adjust your machine, if necessary, to use that foot, and how to evaluate the effects of different types of decorative yarns and threads to achieve desired effects. Finally, will be using our HQ Sweet Sixteens to piece our little purses into the finished product! This class is suitable for even the most inexperienced quilters but, trust me, all of us (even stand up HQ quilters) will be having fun!

Orphan Block to Whole Cloth Masterpiece

Don’t throw or give away those sad orphan blocks. They can be the inspiration for a spectacular whole cloth wall hanging. For many of us, designing on a piece of blank cloth can be intimidating.
