This is a continuation of last week’s blog post, an interview with the creative, Helen Godden.
HQ: Of all your quilts which is your least fave?
I don’t have a least fave. I love them, warts and all as they represent a good time, like a holiday happy snap. Some of them I am less happy with the finished result, but still enjoyed the process and learned something from them, so they are by no means my least fave. An example would be The Blacksmith. I am not happy with a few elements that I could not change, mainly his head, which i,s of course, critical. Other elements of the piece I love and it was a huge challenge that took 2 years to get sorted out in my head. So although the finished piece is not exactly how I imagined, I can’t label it or any, as my least favourite. You have to love ALL your children.
HQ: Who is your inspiration/muse?
My daughter, Vincent Van Gogh, flora and fauna of my country.
HQ: Of all the “tasks” in creating a quilt, which is your favorite and least favorite?
Favourite is designing painting and quilting….the whole thing. I enjoy every step. Once designed I can’t wait to play with colour whether that is fabric or paint; and once that is done I am literally itching to quilt. once it is 80% quilted and I am happy with how I know it will look, the cycle starts again. Any day when I can launch into a new quilt is an awesome day.
Least fav – BINDING and paperwork!!!!!!Computers. It’s a LOVE/HATE relationship, but spending some of my time in front of a screen means I can reach so many quilters around the world and be connected way beyond what I could possibly do if I were to travel 365 days of the year to teach. HQ: What is the most fun thing you have done as an HQ ambassador?
In the BIG Picture, being instrumental in launching HQ into Australia and consequently the rest of the world. On a personal side, being guest speaker at HQ Academy in SLC for large group of quilters who gave me a standing ovation! Teaching at Houston for 5 years in a row with 3 times sold out classes, sharing my love and knowledge of the Sweet to help so many others. Working with the HQ family and feeling a part of the big picture, even when I live so many miles away in Australia.HQ Ambassador for 10 fantastic years, quilting for 14, artist for 30 and will be enjoying the Creative Process of Design, Paint, Quilt, Repeat………for EVER.
Helen’s Liberation from the Ditch DVD was my earliest tool for FMQ. I have since done the Flying into Colours course and currently a part of the Quirky Collections BOM. I now currently own a Sweet Sixteen, mainly due to her influence, and love it.
