I had the opportunity to view an impressive collection of quilts that featured black and white plus one additional color at the Original Sewing and Quilting Expo in Raleigh, NC.  These quilts are the result of the 2016 Quilt Expo Quilt Challenge from Wisconsin Public Television with Nancy Zieman. Quilt challenges are lots of fun to enter. The rules spell out the requirements for the creation of a quilt. Narrowing the possibilities of what can and cannot be used for the design can really test the creativity of the quilter. These quilters rose to the occasion in fine form.

I’d like to share a selection of these quilts, in no particular order, so that you can enjoy them too!

Bull’s-Eye

by Alexandra Wright, Madison, WI

Alexandra was inspired by an Op Art Pintrest board. She di some awesome improvisational quilting on her domestic machine.

Two Poppies

by Rebecca Smith of Rapid City, SD

Rebecca’s floral theme was inspired by a piece of beautiful gradated pink fabric. This is why we all need a stash……for inspiration!

Peaks and Valleys

by Jodi Scaltreto of Hillsboro, NH

Jodi used EQ7 to design this quilt top. The blocks were paper pieced.

I love the texture the black and white fabric brings to this quilt.

Black White and Read, This Could Be Grimm

by Terri Sankovitz of Albuquerque, NM

Terri is a master of fused applique! The name of this quilt is perfect.

As Terri says, Grimm’s Fairy Tales are black and white and read all over.

Night and Day

by Mary Kay Price of  Lake Oswego, OR

This is just a fun little quilt. I loved the fussy cut sun squares!

Sentimental Lady

by Diana Napier of Mountain, WI

Diana was inspired by a photo of her niece dressed as Audrey Hepburn for Halloween. The quilting in the background of this quilt is very chic, just like Audrey.

Fabric Optics

by Susan Legner of Wausau, WI

quilted by Jan Meachen

Susan learned to quilt just a short 4 1/2 years ago by reading books from the library! Amazing design and use of fabrics. The straight line quilting in the red is fantastic.

Bird Leaves

by Jill Kerttula of Charlottesville, VA

Jill used photos on fabric, hand and machine stitching, pigeon feathers, dryer lint, beads, yarns, trapunto and layering. Wow!

The Nature of Nectar

by Stacy Ironside of Marshall, WI

Stacy was challenged by her mother to make this quilt. It is her first quilt! And, she says, it’s the most sewing she has done in her life.

I love how she emphasized the color rather than the B/W. The quilting creates some fabulous texture.

Hannah’s Star

by Ellen Hodge of Lindenhurst, IL

Ellen says she intended to convey a star that is emerging and dynamic. I think she nailed it!

Weekly Walk: Winter

by Laura Moss Gottlieb of Madison, WI

This quilt is a tribute to the walk Laura has taken with her friend every week for 20 years! That’s dedication! Her fused raw edge appliqué is wonderful!

Going ‘Round in Circles

by Bonnie Edwards of Rock City, IL

Bonnie says she used a “fat wool batting” for lots of texture. I love the black and white requirement achieved with a scrappy black on white  fabric background. And then she embellished with prairie points and buttons.

Retro Deco

by Peggy Denton of LaCrosse, WI

quilted by Gini Ewers

Peggy and Gini were inspired by an art deco bathroom tile design. See? There’s quilt inspiration EVERYWHERE!

Odyssey

by Karen Crocker of Waukesha, WI

This minimalist design has only 3 seams. The no passing lines are

painted. There is just enough quilting to enhance the undulating curves.

Golden Web

by Nancy Dorl of Belleville, WI

Nancy used a design from American Quilter magazine. The gold lamé really makes the quilt unique.

Imagination Tree

by Pennee Clanton of Buffalo, SD

quilted by Rebecca Smith

Cute appliqué quit with the striking moon and bird.

Pretty in Pink

by Kim Borowy of Tequesta, FL

The choice of the same fabric in opposite color way is very visually pleasing. I loved the dimensional flowers and the subtle pink accent created with decorative stitches.

Marigold

by Linda Reuss Benson of Cedar Grove, WI

A tribute to Linda’s volcanic orange 2015 Mini Cooper.  I loved the background and the racing flag. Do you think Linda drives fast?

You Go Girl

by Nancy Acker of Brodhead, WI

“What if there were 7 crow eggs and 6 hatched black, but one burst out in glorious pink?” This is how Nancy explains her quilt! In the background are ‘Crow’s Nest’ pieced blocks. How clever!

Dalmatian

by Susan Alioto of Madison, WI

Susan was inspired by a photo in a newspaper that she saw 30 years ago. She finally finished that UFO!

I hoped you enjoyed this little quilt show! Are you inspired to create some thing in black and white and ?. Or perhaps you want to enter the challenge for 2017? You can find the rules here

Happy quilting!

  1. Thank you for sharing these creative quilts! I was especially struck by the wolf quilt from the quilter in Albuquerque. I grew up there and attended the University of New Mexico. The school mascot is the “Lobo”, Spanish for wolf. So Terri’s quilt is very fitting for that city!
