I’ve resolved to finish more quilts this year. Specifically UFO’s. If you missed last week’s post, you can read it here.

In order to accomplish my resolution, I had to dig around in my studio and find where I had stashed some projects waiting to be finished. I found a drawer filled with stuff, some of which were blocks that I had “won” in my guild’s block of the month drawing.

It works like this: the Block of the Month committee comes up with a block and a color scheme. They make a couple of examples and present them at the guild meeting. You go home with a sheet of instructions and make a block according to the rules. Bring it back the next month with your name pinned to it. All the blocks go into a hat and one “winner” is drawn and goes home with all the blocks. Then they can, presumably, make a quilt. The reason I put the words “won” and “winner” in quotation marks is that I question whether this is an actual prize that you would be happy to win. The blocks are never all the same size and never really quite square. Sigh.  It’s a wonderful concept, the block of the month program. And I have seen some really nice quilts come forth. It just takes a lot of skill and patience to square up the blocks and make them come together in a quilt. Still, I participate, to support the guild. But, can I tell you a secret? I put someone else’s name on my block. Shhhh! Don’t tell!

So I have decided to “finish” these blocks into a quilt by donating them to my local church group. They make quilts for comforting those in need of comfort, be it illness, or loneliness, or hard times. They also make quilts that are sold at a bi-annual sale and the proceeds are donated to various church missions. One of the members of the group is a genius at taking orphan blocks and scraps and making something wonderful from them. She is going to love these Block of the Month collections!

I am counting that as a UFO finish. Well, OK, it is (kind of) cheating. How about 1/2 ?  So far this year I have finished 1 and 1/2 UFO’s! Yay me!

How about you? Have you made some progress to finishing?

Maybe you have a group in your town who would love to have the pieces and parts of a quilt that you know you will never, ever, finish. Check with your local quilt shop or ask at your guild. Don’t forget about national organizations like Quilts for Kids or Quilts of Valor. Maybe you have a chapter near you that would love to finish that UFO and give it to someone who will love the quilt. That’s what finishing quilts is all about, after all, isn’t it? Someone will love the quilt.

  1. Keep up the good work MB. I am headed to work on #10. Have another one on the design wall and another ready to sandwich which has to be quilted on my sewing machine.

  2. I made 3 lists for 2018. The first are UFOs, tops which are finished but not quilted. I have finished two so far this January. There were only 8 on this list. This is made easier since I am getting more familiar with my Sweet 16 and I am getting better using rulers and FMQ. The second list is for projects started but not completed. Surprisingly only 4 on this list. The third list is my WishList of projects to make. I have the fabrics, patterns, just need to get at them, undisturbed. There are over 25 on this list.
